Danny Aiello vs. Paul Sorvino
Battle of the Portly Paisans
There was a time when the universe seemed plenty big enough for all the stars, the moons, the planets, and both Paul Sorvino and Danny Aiello. One could play a fatherly neighborhood pizza entrepreneur in Do The Right Thing, while the other played a fatherly gangster in Goodfellas. One could try to thwart a torrid romance as Fulgencio Capulet in Romeo + Juliet, while the other tried to thwart a torrid romance as Johnny Cammareri in Moonstruck.
Well, we don't know if the universe got smaller or Sorvino and Aiello got bigger. But suddenly, they seem redundant. Why?
Consider this: one just starred in a movie called Mambo Café while the other starred in a movie called Mambo Italiano. Sorvino already has a film titled Ciao America, in which he plays Antonio Primavera, under his admittedly generous belt. Meanwhile, Aiello's about to star in a film titled That's Amore in which he plays, yes, Danny Amore. And one is currently appearing in Mr. 3000 -- guess which one? Does it matter?
Hey, if there are enough parts as Johnny Arrividerci or Frank Mascarpone in Benvenuto Massimo or Fuhgeddaboutit! to keep both of these actors fully occupied, then buono. We're not saying we don't want both of them. We're just saying that they've reached that point at which they've become essentially and entirely interchangeable -- where they've become two increasingly unwieldy actors being shoehorned into one very unforgiving niche.
Then again, it's really nothing to worry about it. As Danny Amore (or Antonio Primavera, or Fusilli Linguine) might say: Fuhgeddaboutit!
Advantage: Sorvino. Because he can sing opera.
