Tony Goldwyn vs. Tate Donovan
Battle of the Bland WASP Pretty-Boys
Hollywood loves a good-looking blond dude. Ask Brad Pitt; he'll tell you. But what about those blond actors who are attractive -- don't get us wrong -- but who are just not extraordinarily good-looking on the order of your Brad Pitts, your Jude Laws, your Scott Speedmen? Well, they might carve out the kinds of careers that Tate Donovan and Tony Goldwyn have. Both have had roles in forgettable or marginal historical pictures (Goldwyn in the HBO mini-series From the Earth to the Moon; Donovan in the WWII movie Memphis Belle); both have pitched in on terrible "thrillers" (Donovan in Murder at 1600; Goldwyn in Kiss the Girls); and both have voiced the title characters of animated Disney movies (Donovan in Hercules; Goldwyn in Tarzan). Donovan will be remembered by readers of People as the boyfriend of two young starlets in succession who "traded up" as they became more famous: Sandra Bullock dumped him for Matthew McConaughey, and Jennifer Aniston dusted him for the above-mentioned Brad Pitt. Goldwyn's showiest role was as the bad guy in Ghost who was dragged down to hell by Latino demons. Neither of them really merits much attention, to be completely frank, but since the Disney voice-over job is now the biggest thing on both their résumés, it will be interesting to see who will parlay it into bigger fame. It will also be interesting to guess who will be the next starlet to date, then dump, Tate Donovan. My money's on Natalie Portman.
Advantage: For now, Goldwyn, but only because he's the latest one to impress himself on the public's consciousness.
