Plot Synopses for the Series Finale of Friends
In the age of the internet, it's harder than ever to keep high-profile TV "events" under wraps. There are so many sources from which spoilers can leak that producers have to take heroic measures to make sure that the surprises still hit with audiences -- namely, shooting multiple endings for episodes so that even the people who work on the shows don't know which one will ultimately make it to air.
For the recent series finale of Sex & The City, the cast and crew shot three different endings to preserve the secret of Big and Carrie's reunion -- and that was just for cable. The upcoming series finale of Friends will be a much bigger media event, and hence NBC and Warner Bros. had to go even further to conceal the episode plot from the public's prying eyes. They didn't just shoot multiple endings -- they shot multiple episodes. Fortunately, we have acquired synopses for them, and have no compunction about sharing them:
Possible Finale #1: The One With The Prophetic Dreams
As Chandler and Monica make final preparations for the arrival of their baby, they both start having anxious dreams about being parents. They've been waiting so long, but are they really ready?! Monica has nightmares about letting herself go as a mother, allowing Courteney Cox one final opportunity to crawl into the riotously funny prosthetics and makeup that transform her into the hideously hilarious person of Fat Monica; meanwhile, Chandler imagines his daughter grown up into a sexy teenager, and himself a doting but protective father screening her various beaux. Mike gets jealous when Phoebe partners with a pianist (Alicia Keys), and they get offered a regular slot at a venue bigger than Mike's piano bar. Can the new marriage survive this sort of professional stress?! Ross continues pining over Rachel, who is in Paris working for Louis Vuitton; Ross, however, is too scared of rejection to admit his feelings to her (much as we all know he loves to propose!). Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe are all at Central Perk consoling Ross when Joey runs in to say that he's landed on the pilot of a new medical drama (due, no doubt, to his background in medical acting after years on Days Of Our Lives!)...that shoots in Los Angeles! He'll be moving almost immediately! As the gang takes in the news, Rachel steals in, with Emma in a stroller, and plants a big smooch on Ross; we fade to black knowing that the greatest couple in sitcom history is going to be reunited after all -- surprise!
Possible Finale #2: The One With The Greenwich Village Commune
Preparing to leave New York for their new house in the suburbs, Monica and Chandler transfer the lease on their apartment to Phoebe and Mike -- might as well keep prime real estate like that in the family! But when an unforeseen gas-line problem prevents the Bings from moving in to their new home on schedule, they're forced to renege on their abandonment of the apartment and move back in -- sharing it with Phoebe and Mike! Hey, didn't they hear that having roommates in your thirties is a little pathet...!? When Joey gets fired from Days Of Our Lives -- for sleeping with and then dumping a highly-placed producer (Catherine Keener) -- he must scramble to get a new job quickly, and lands a job on a new nighttime soap opera...that shoots in Los Angeles! Meanwhile, Ross signs up with an academic headhunter (Holland Taylor) to try -- mostly unsuccessfully, as he gets too anxious and geeks out on his interviews (typical Ross!) -- to get himself a new job at a European university, closer to Paris where Emma (and Rachel!) will soon be living. The gang reunites at Chandler and Monica's (or is it Phoebe and Mike's?!) to welcome their new baby; Ross gets a cell-phone call saying he's been offered a teaching job at the Sorbonne; he instantly gets down on one knee and proposes to Rachel, who accepts just before we fade to black. "On a break" no more!
Possible Finale #3: The One With The Man-Man Action
In his efforts to get Rachel back from Paris -- where she's happily working at Louis Vuitton -- Ross must swallow his pride and appeal for help to his archenemy, Mark the fashion guy, about possible jobs for Rachel back in New York. Unfortunately, he does it behind Rachel's back, and the news of his machinations gets back to her through Mark; an irate Rachel tells him they'll never get back together as long as he can be so devious...but she can't possibly mean it, can she?! To cement their commitment to each other, Phoebe and Mike decide to take the plunge, and start trying to get...a puppy! Joey accidentally gets sent, by his distracted agent, on the wrong audition, trying out for a lead role...on a gay-themed drama! Though the casually homophobic Joey is uncomfortable at the thought of taking the role (even though he's already practised his man-man kissing -- with Ross!), he aces the audition and gets offered the part. The only problem is...it shoots in Los Angeles! As Chandler and Monica pack their apartment and go through all the mysterious boxes stacked up in Monica's secret, messy closet, they discover yet another video of (fat!) Monica, (big-nosed!) Rachel, and (jewfroed!) Ross in high school; the tape shows Ross playing a touching song about Rachel's many charms -- not knowing he's being taped! Chandler quickly digitizes the tape and emails it to Rachel, who doesn't seem moved. But as the gang watches the last of the Bings' boxes being moved out of their apartment to the suburbs, Rachel rushes in to beg Ross for another chance. He agrees, but as they go in for their big kiss, Monica -- seeing a chance to put the focus of the moment back on herself -- declares that she is pregnant. Two babies for Monica and Chandler! And the reunion of Ross and Rachel! Sitcoms simply do not get any better in this world!
