Notes On An Up-And-Down Career: An Interview With Kirstie Alley's Weight

Fametracker: Thanks for joining us. What's your relationship with Kirstie Alley been like over the years?

Kirstie Alley's Weight: Up and down.

FT: Do you work well together?

KA'sW: For a long time, I was happy to work in Kirstie Alley's shadow. Then again, you could argue that I was the one creating Kirstie Alley's shadow.

FT: Nice. So when did you start thinking about building a career of your own?

KA'sW: It wasn't really until Veronica's Closet that people started to notice me.

FT: Was there ever any jealousy between the two of you?

KA'sW: Well, I think at the beginning, when I was getting in the papers a lot, she really resented that. But you have to understand, my career was ballooning. I was blowing up -- huge. So people really noticed.

FT: And what happened?

KA'sW: I actually went to her and proposed the idea of doing my own show with her participation.

FT: How did she take that?

KA'sW: I think she saw that it could benefit her to let me take some of the spotlight. So we signed on to do Fat Actress. Of course, there was some tension when she realized her name wasn't going to be in the title, while mine was.

FT: What happened then?

KA'sW: She tried to drop me, frankly. And for a while, she did. And that was fine -- I mean, I tried to tell her, "I'm your weight, no matter what." Good times, bad times, fat times, lean times -- I'm still there.

FT: And that's when the attention dried up too.

KA'sW: Yes. I mean, Fat Actress wasn't exactly Curb Your Enthusiasm. More like Curb Your Appetite, if you get my meaning.

FT: Nice.

KA'sW: So I think she thought, you know, she'll just do one show with me as the focus, then go back to how it used to be, with her front and center and me just as a subplot. But it didn't work out that way. And when people stopped talking about me, they stopped caring about her.

FT: But you're back now.

KA'sW: Well, I'd already come back in a big way. I think she realized she needed me. But then this Oprah thing -- I mean, it's silly. Because that's all me. At this point, it's like, who's the real star here?

FT: Sure. Of course.

KA'sW: And I think we're seeing that more and more. I was talking to Nicole Richie's Weight about this the other day. We're the ones people are talking about. We're the ones driving the coverage. We need to strike out on our own and get our own projects going.

FT: What did Nicole Richie's Weight say?

KA'sW: I don't know. I couldn't hear her. She was kind of breathy and mumbling. Then she fainted. But I've said the same thing to Britney Spears's Weight too. I mean, this whole Oprah thing came about because I always wanted to work with Oprah's Weight. If there's an A-list in this business, Oprah's Weight is right there at the top. Though at this point I think I could measure up, pound for pound.

FT: How did you feel about the bikini stunt?

KA'sW: Personally, I thought it was a little gauche. You know, it's hurtful when all someone does is try to shed you, and then brag to the whole world about it. But as you could see on Oprah, I'm still around. And I'm not going anywhere.

FT: Will you continue to work together?

KA'sW: I think so. As I always tell her, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And then I give her a cupcake.

FT: Too true. Thanks, Kirstie Alley's Weight.

KA'sW: Thank you. Are you going to finish that?
