American Blue Moon
With the release this summer of American Splendor and American Wedding -- joining such recent films as American Beauty, American Pie, American Movie, American Virgin, American Buffalo, American Babylon, American Outlaws, and American History X -- you might wonder: Are there any American [Blank] titles left? The answer is: Yes, but they're going fast.
In fact, there are now roughly 226 movies titled American [Blank], give or take an American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt. Of course, all the obvious words -- Anthem, Cowboy, Flag Yakuza -- are already gone; for example, there are three different movies titled American Dream, three more titled American Dreamers, and one titled American Dreams.
But let's say you want to do a film that captures all the contradictions and complexities of the American experiment -- the brashness and the boldness, the seductiveness of the American dream and the grittiness of the American reality -- as symbolized by a root vegetable. Sorry -- if that vegetable is American Carrot, then somebody beat you to it. Okay, how about a nation-defining fruit? Well, it better not be American Raspberry -- also spoken for.
American Shoeshine? Gone! American Silt? Denied! American Hot Wax? No way! American Me? American Guess Again!
American Standard? American Standoff? American Slices? Sorry, play again, and better luck next time. And don't even think of ordering an American Coffee or even an American Chai -- both are already off the menu. As for American Pimp, American Pluck, and American Pop: Nope, not this time, and too slow, Joe.
Do not despair, however. Your national-identity defining opus may yet find a resonant, cliché title. As a public service, Fametracker has collected this list of American [Blank] titles that are, at press time, still available. Feel free to use. Just act quickly.
