Inside the Extra's Studio: Bit Players From Apocalypto Talk About Their Characters

Espiridion Acosta Cache: "Old Story Teller"

"So my first question on the first day of shooting was, 'So, am I 'Old Story Teller' in the sense of being old and wise, or is it more like, 'Hey, Old Story Teller!' The way you might say, 'Look, it's good old Bob!' or 'You still driving that old car?' or, like, 'Hey old fella!'? Because that's going to change my interpretation of the character a lot. In one case, he's revered. In the other, it's more like he's a Jolly Good Fellow. Maybe I should be called 'Jolly Good Storyteller.' I'd find that clearer. And more appealing."

Hiram Soto: Fish Hunter

"The way I see it, my main question is, What drives a man to hunt fish? Not just to fish -- I mean, my character's name isn't 'Fisher.' Or 'Fisherman.' He's 'Fish Hunter.' I think he really feels some anger toward these fish. I think, for him, it's personal. Like, maybe his sister was raped by fish. It could happen. It's the Amazon."

José Suárez: First Temple Sacrifice

"I said to Mel Gibson, 'Suppose I'm not the first. I don't mean being a temple sacrifice, but maybe I'm, like, number four.' He kept telling me it's an honor to be first, but I thought, 'Let me be in a few other scenes. Just in the background. Establish some relationships. Who's my wife? Who's my kid? What do I do? Am I a plumber? Maybe I'm a small businessman in the community? And maybe I don't have to be the first one marched to the altar, as it were.' Then Mr. Gibson said it was this or be killed by a jaguar. Then he kind of chuckled."

Javier Escobar: "Vicious Holcane"

"So, you know, I'm vicious. Obviously. My question as an actor is: Why? And you know what I came up with? Bedwetting."

Nicolás Jasso: "Man on Temple Top"

"Look at me! I'm on top of the temple! Yeah, we had fun filming that scene. I figure, sure, I'm just a guy in the crowd, but for a second, I get to be right on the temple's top. So that's something, right? I told my wife to look out for it. It's right before I get eaten by a jaguar. It's more or less obscured by a bush."

Abel Woolrich: "Laughing Man"

"The way I approach it is, I think of something funny, and I go from there."

Ronaldo Eknal: "Slave Auctioneer"

"In order to play a character, you have to like the character. I firmly believe that. No matter who they are. You have to find that kernel inside the character that allows you to access them. So I figure, with this guy -- yes, he sells slaves. Okay. But you know what? He tries to get a good price. It's an auction. Anyone can bid. That seems fair. Also, maybe on the weekend he auctions other things, like crafts at craft shows. Or bachelors, for charity. Like a charity auction with men, and you bid on them to get a date. You know, so it's not all about slaves with this guy. Sometimes it's about giving back."

Miriam Tun: "Woman Auctioneer"

"Occasionally at an auction, you like to have a woman's touch. The bidders feel more comfortable. I work with the Slave Auctioneer to ensure the best auction for everyone. Except the slaves, who are pretty much miserable no matter what, in my experience."

Rafael Velez: "King"; Diana Botello: "Queen"

Rafael: "I won't lie. We thought these roles would be a lot more prominent."
Diana: "To be honest, I thought this was the same role Helen Mirren had been up for. Then I got to the costume fitting."
