Rejected Ways For Will Smith's Character To Show He's Smart In The Trailer For The Pursuit Of Happyness
For a few weeks now, unsuspecting moviegoers have been assaulted by a trailer for the forthcoming holiday heartwarmer, The Pursuit Of Happyness [sic]. The apparently true story concerns a single father, played by Will Smith, working to make a better life for his son by completing an internship at Dean Witter to become a stockbroker. The trailer shows us that Smith's character is proud (homeless, he locks himself and his son in a public men's room, and cries), determined (getting hit by a cab doesn't slow him from his progress in getting to the office), but most of all smart: the last of these we learn when Smith's character is handed a Rubik's Cube and quickly solves it. Which...you know, solving a Rubik's Cube isn't easy, but the thing is a children's toy; leaving it such that each side is the same colour isn't like hacking into a Cray supercomputer. But you guys, that's just the trailer! The movie itself is peppered with little moments, though not included in the preview, in which Smith's character effortlessly demonstrates his brilliance:
Buys new TV; declines extended warranty
Frees himself from Chinese finger trap
Dines at restaurant with free refills at soda fountain; purchases small cup
Instantly calculates tip on $10 cheque
Completes TV Guide crossword puzzle -- in pen
Brushes teeth in shower, saving valuable morning prep time
Saves play money in Monopoly by not drawing attention to his piece landing on other players' properties and hoping they don't notice
Leaves convenience store without buying lottery ticket
Avoids a highway traffic jam by taking surface streets
Invited to guess a woman's age, he declines
Chooses not to take a long walk in new shoes
Skips rope -- double dutch
Purchases dairy products with expiry date furthest in the future
Invited to guess a woman's weight, he declines
Night before a workplace drug test, doesn't smoke pot
Lays wool sweater flat to dry instead of putting it in the dryer
Figures out that first suspect seen in episode of Law & Order probably not guilty
Doubles down on eleven
Pats head while rubbing stomach
