Inside the Extra's Studio: Bit Players from Lady In The Water Talk About Their Characters

Andrew Aninsman: "Party goer"

"Sure, I know there are a lot of actors credited as 'Party goer' or 'Party Guest.' I mean, it's a party, right? There's going to be lots of people. And I know I'm listed first because it's alphabetical. But I like to think it's also because I bring a little something extra -- a little something extra to the 'party,' as it were. Literally and figuratively. Like, everyone's partying, but I feel I conveyed both a sense of 'Great party,' while also conveying a shade of 'Seriously, who is that chick from the pool?'"

J. Bloomrosen: "The Divorced Man"

"What kind of marriage did I have? Was it my fault or her fault? Did we scream a lot, or were there simply suffocating silences? That kind of thing isn't written in the script -- or, at least, it's not if you don't know how to look for it."

John Boyd: "One Eyebrow Smoker"

"One thing I knew right away about this character: He's bad with flame."

Rich Bryant: "Rain Guy"

"Yes, I admit, when my agent first called me about going in for this, I thought it was a sequel to Rain Man. I look a bit like a young Hoffman, so I'm thinking, maybe prequel? And even though this is something different, I kept a bit of that essential character in my performance. Like, at the party, you might be able to hear me saying 'Wapner.' I threw it in, as chatter. Like, in the background. Like, 'Rhubarb Wapner Rhubarb Wapner Rhubarb Wapner.'It sounds surprisingly real."

Al Camardella: "Party Guest"

"This guy, he just loves to party."

M.P. Cherkowsky: "Party Guest"

"I felt like I'm getting a bit ambivalent about partying. I've partied hard before, don't get me wrong. But I'm starting to look for something new."

Nancy de Zutter: "Nurse/Party Goer"

"Obviously, being a nurse is a big part of this character. She's never really off-duty, when you think about it. It's not just her job. It's who she is. Plus, obviously, she loves to party."

Grant Monohon: "Emaciated Smoker"

"It's true -- I lost sixty pounds for this role. I had to. Do I hope the Academy notices? Look, for me, it's not about awards. But I like to think I have a certain dedication to my craft. Similarly, I was thinking of quitting smoking a couple of weeks before I got this role, and then I didn't. You know, whatever it takes -- that's my approach."

Keith Moyer: "Long Haired Party Guest"

"I party, but I'm old-school. And I'm scared of paper shredders. I'm like an old hippie who parties with the best of them, but he's scared of getting his hair caught in a paper shredder."

Mark J. Parker: "Party Extra"

"Sure, I could look at it like 'extra,' as in a movie. But I prefer to think my character is someone who really brings it, above and beyond -- you know, I make it not just a party. I make it party extra."

Adam Schoon: "Partygoer (uncredited)"

"Am I disappointed? Sure. I mean, it's a big party, I know that. I understand that. But, you know, Camardella gets a credit. Cherkowsky gets a credit. I'm sure M. Night will give himself a credit, for that part where he appears at the party and explains the plot, then tells everyone that the bad guys are afraid of water. Oops -- spoiler warning. Anyway, I've filed a grievance. I didn't want to, but fair's fair. I know Camardella's a guest, and I'm just a goer, but still. I partied too. Hard."
